Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre wins Sustainable Project of the Year Award

31st Jul, 2017

The Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre (CERC), a project SDS were involved in, has been awarded Sustainable Project of the Year at the Michelmores Property Awards in Exeter.

The Centre was designed to reduce and reuse waste, using innovative methods to incinerate household waste into heat and power instead of the waste merely ending up on landfill.

The heat is used on site, both for the plant and to heat the administration building. The generated electricity is used to provide the site’s own power, with the surplus exported to the National Grid. As well as providing office space for Cornwall Energy Recovery Limited’s management team, there is also a Visitor Centre developed to engage with all ages to educate and inform about recycling.

Judge Sarah Buck, said: “This was a complex project to design and to deliver. The end result is very impressive. The judges were hugely impressed, not only with the building but also with the Visitor Centre and the way that the design team and everyone involved with the project had links with the local community.”
