SDS vs The Giant Squid at STEMFest!

21st Sep, 2017

SDS engineers are supporting Plymouth’s STEMFest event, which has been taking place at The National Marine Aquarium recently.

The Giant Squid Challenge, in association with the Aquarium and BuildingPlymouth.co.uk, has seen children from local schools take part in tasks using STEM skills to design a tank to house a Giant Squid ‘caught by accident off the South West coast’.

Given the brief of creating a high quality, flagship visitor experience with a budget of £2m, the children within their teams take on professional construction roles such as architect, structural engineer, mechanical and electrical engineer, quantity surveyor and project manager. SDS engineers were present to give support and advice to the children in terms of the mechanical and electrical elements needed for the tank including light levels, temperature, water treatment filtration systems, to name a few.

STEMFest encourages school children to understand problem solving, team work, communication and mathematical reasoning, as well as introducing them to the roles within the construction industry, aiming to inspire future career paths into engineering.
