ERADE (Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education), Exmouth

Project Description

£10m development to create a high quality modern learning environment and associated living accommodation for the education of deaf children and young adults (3- 21 years). On-site residential accommodation, provides additional needs

Demolition of existing redundant educational buildings Provision of new 2,160m² 2-storey teaching academy block

Remodeling of existing 1,490m² Owen Theatre building, retaining the main theatre space and seminar rooms, and conversion of existing main entrance spaces to offices

Remodeling of existing 150m² DT/FM building to form a new design technology teaching space and space for the facilities management department

Provision of 1,290m² 3-storey student accommodation block, containing 48 bedrooms arranged in a series of nine cluster flats, with shared communal and ancillary spaces, and staff/parent en- suite rooms for residential stays

Site wide infrastructure including parking, roads, pathways, landscaping; and associated works

High quality modern learning environment for the education of deaf children and young adults

Project Involvement

Detailed design of building mechanical and electrical engineering services including full production of detailed design information in Revit MEP to inform the Building Information Model, thermal model, daylight model and low and zero carbon study

Complete load assessments, undertake infrastructure review and identify site diversions and isolations to accommodate the works, and infrastructure provision required to suit the proposals

Due to the very specialist nature of the SEN, end-users within the building attended detailed co-ordination meetings to ensure the room data sheets generated captured the specialist nature of the facility to accommodate pupils’ additional needs

Project Benefits

Worked collaboratively as a part of an integrated design team, providing our low carbon and building environmental expertise to deliver a sustainable building to BREEAM standards demonstrating environmentally friendly options for both the design and on-going operation

Utilised Autodesk Revit MEP to produce a fully coordinated Building Information Model to a level of development consistent with Level 2, as a platform for coordination with architectural and structural proposals

Considered the additional needs of the pupils throughout the design process, incorporating accessibility and audio and visual aids as a core design element, and provision of specialist infrastructure to therapy and sensory rooms
