The Morrab Library is a Grade II listed, two-storey granite independent library established in 1818
The library is housed in a Victorian mansion within the beautiful Morrab Gardens in Penzance, Cornwall
Ranking sixth largest in the UK, the library holds over 55,000 books as well as archives and rich photographic collection
The new £1.2m extension provides extra storage space as well as a new home for the library’s photographic archive
Commissioned under Cornwall Council framework SDS worked with architects Poynton Bradbury and contractor TEC Construction
SDS carried out a survey of the existing services and worked with the team to develop a feasibility study for the extension
Detailed mechanical and electrical services design were prepared together with the M&E tender documents and specification
Heating was provided through a gas boiler serving underfloor heating with heat recovery and with mechanical ventilation in
the basement
A suitable lighting scheme was prepared using various types of fluorescent fittings
New fire alarms were provided to the existing library
During construction, SDS attended design team meetings and undertook inspections of the works
Integration of modern M&E services with the existing period fittings in the original building
Low energy, carbon technologies were used where possible and in keeping with the building in its environment
