SDS were appointed to design the comprehensive replacement of 50 Hz and 60 Hz electrical switchgear, wiring, containment systems, and power outlets. The upgrade ensures the continued reliable operation of the Nuclear Utilities Building (NUB) for at least the next 25 years.

This design project focused on replacing the existing electrical building services at the NUB facility, which supports critical nuclear-related production operations. Maintaining an uninterrupted power supply during the upgrade was essential to prevent operational disruptions. SDS developed and implemented a replacement strategy that utilised standby generators to ensure continuous power throughout the works.

Through careful planning and a phased approach, SDS successfully modernised the facility’s electrical infrastructure while preserving its operational integrity.

  • Replacement of key electrical components, including 50 Hz and 60 Hz switchboards, to enhance capacity and reliability.
  • Upgraded distribution boards to improve power distribution efficiency and accommodate future demand.
  • Modernised cables and containment systems to ensure safety, durability, and compliance with current standards.
  • Installation of new 230V and 110V outlets to support updated operational requirements.
  • Comprehensive site surveys conducted within a challenging environment, including radiologically controlled areas.

  • Development of concept design through to a fully spatially coordinated design.

  • Creation of a plant replacement and temporary power strategy.

  • Identification of requirements for further investigations and highlighting of project risks, including programme and health and safety concerns.

  • Client and stakeholder presentations chaired by SDS to secure design sign-off and advance the project to the next design phase.
