Lighting Design and Strategy

The strategy enhances architecture, achieves compliance, supports function, and provides a sustainable solution. Our team works across a vast range of sectors, providing practical and creative lighting designs for:

  • Architectural and heritage lighting
  • Interior, exterior and façade lighting
  • Lighting strategies and master planning
  • Sports, leisure and recreation lighting
  • Emergency lighting
  • Commercial and industrial lighting
  • MOD and defence facilities
  • Healthcare and NHS estates
  • Residential and mixed-use developments
  • Rail depots, stations, and sidings
  • Aviation and marine environments

Who We Work With

Our lighting specialists collaborate with:

  • Architects, planners and design teams
  • Private clients
  • Developers and contractors
  • Local Planning Authorities (LPA’s)
  • Environmental consultants and ecologists

We understand the balance between creative vision, technical performance and environmental responsibility, ensuring every design meets both aesthetic and compliance objectives.

Lighting Impact Assessments

Lighting Impact Assessments (LIA) ensure proposed schemes minimise light pollution and protect ecological and residential environments. LIA’s are undertaken in line with the Institute of Lighting Professional (ILP) Guidance Notes and the requirements of the Bat Conservation Trust (BCT).

We assess the selection, position, distribution, intensity and timing of artificial lighting to understand its environmental effects. Our reports are detailed and prepared in line with planning requirements and best practice guidance, supporting sustainable development and responsible lighting design.

Existing Lighting Assessments

Our team also conduct assessments on existing lighting installations, checking compliance, nuisance, suitability and their practicality. Lighting assessments include but are not limited to:

  • External Lighting Installations
  • Obtrusive Lighting Assessments
  • Baseline Surveys
  • Light Level Testing

The reports we produce not only align to latest best practice guidance but also provide key advice to minimise nuisance to surrounding neighbours or wildlife while still achieving compliance.

Daylight Analysis

Maximising natural daylight improves comfort, reduces energy demand and supports occupant wellbeing. Our daylight analysis service helps clients make informed design decisions to optimise daylight levels within buildings.

We use Climate-Based Daylight Modelling (CBDM) to understand how light behaves throughout the year, referencing local weather data. Our analysis includes metrics such as:

  • Useful Daylight Illuminance (UDI)

  • Spatial Daylight Autonomy (SDA)

This dynamic approach supports energy-efficient design and helps projects meet planning and sustainability benchmarks.

With extensive experience across sectors, our lighting team provides designs that are not only visually compelling but also energy-efficient, compliant and sustainable.

Whether you need expert input for a planning application submission, a detailed daylight model, an assessment on existing lighting installations, or a fully integrated lighting design, our team is ready to help.
