Langarth Energy Centre is a cornerstone of the Garden Village’s transformation, acting as the primary power hub that enables phased construction, integration of renewable technologies, and long-term grid stability.

Langarth Garden Village, located west of Truro, is a flagship new community designed to deliver over 3,500 homes, commercial spaces, and community amenities for more than 8,000 residents. The development represents a significant step forward in sustainable growth for Cornwall, combining modern living with environmental resilience and community wellbeing.

SDS was instructed by Cornwall Council, in collaboration with Arcadis, to design and deliver resilient, future-ready infrastructure solutions that will form the backbone of Langarth Garden Village. The scope includes strategic planning and delivery of utilities, transport networks, drainage, and sustainable systems to ensure the long-term functionality and success of the new settlement.

  • Provided expert advisory and programme management services, ensuring strategic oversight and risk reduction.
  • Designed and coordinated HV/LV networks, creating a multi-million-pound IDNO-adopted system to support long-term growth.
  • Developed a robust earthing strategy for a “HOT” site, safeguarding assets and unlocking developable land.
  • Managed utility diversions with National Grid, minimising disruption and avoiding costly delays.
  • Collaborated with ecology, drainage, heating, and planning teams to align infrastructure with low-carbon goals.
  • Implemented design standards and asset strategies to reduce lifecycle costs.

  • Installed an 18,000 kVA primary substation and ten 1,000 kVA units, powering homes and businesses.

  • Delivered a 4 km, 11 kV utility spine to support village-wide expansion.

  • Implemented innovative earthing to prevent sterilisation while ensuring compliance and safety.

  • Streamlined approvals and sequencing to keep a multi-million-pound programme on schedule.

  • Provided future-ready infrastructure supporting Cornwall Council’s sustainable vision.
