The project delivers a three-storey Digital & Data Centre extension to the Hele Building, featuring a lecture theatre, teaching spaces, and a central atrium with exhibition and digital display areas. It also includes a full ground-floor refurbishment with new learning facilities, a café, and a career centre.

Phase 1 formed a three-storey extension to the existing Hele Building at the main entrance of the campus, delivering a new Digital & Data Centre as part of the South West Institute of Technology.

As part of a £70 million scheme, the 2,400 m² extension featured a central atrium connecting the two buildings, with dedicated exhibition space and a striking digital wall. The project also included a full refurbishment of the existing ground floor, creating new teaching spaces, a learning resource facility, a café, and a careers centre.

The IoT extension provided a lecture theatre and modern teaching spaces designed to accommodate up to 1,549 digital and data students.

  • Involved at an early stage of the project, assessing the services infrastructure to support an outline planning application for the 20-Year Master Plan.

  • Undertook a baseline night-time survey to record existing conditions, capturing photographic evidence and observations from specific viewpoint locations to document existing light sources.

  • Designed external lighting to minimise impacts on sensitive receptors, including local residents, ecological areas, the night-time environment, and road users.

  • Designed new internal lighting throughout the IoT building, ensuring seamless integration with existing lighting systems.

  • Produced a RIBA Stage 2 Concept Design, including thermal modelling and daylighting calculations.

  • Developed a lighting scheme aligned with the client’s aspirations and design vision.

  • Ensured all lighting designs complied with British Standards and relevant CIBSE guidance for each internal space.

  • Specified energy-efficient luminaires to minimise energy consumption and enhance sustainability.

  • Contributed to strengthening the region’s reputation and leadership in shaping the nation’s digital future.

  • The project was shortlisted for a Digital Award at the CESW Awards 2021.
