A £6m school development approved by the Department of Education (DfE) Modern Methods of Construction Framework in Norwich, Norfolk.

The design focuses on carbon neutral energy performance and maximising sustainability through adopting low carbon energy systems, reducing water consumption and waste output.

The turn key modular facility will cater for 360 junior pupils, 44 teaching staff and will provide modern, accessible facilities to accommodate the school’s education vision, including classrooms, circulation spaces, toilets and communal spaces.

The pre-manufactured modular build follows the Department of Education’s Standard of achieving Net Zero Carbon. The design focuses on carbon neutral energy performance and maximising sustainability through adopting low carbon energy systems, reducing water consumption and waste output.

  • SDS provided MEP detail design services to RIBA 4
  • Early client engagement meetings with the school and Department of Education, assisted with forming an accurate brief
  • Early stage thermal, daylighting and energy modelling
  • Preliminary energy analysis for ventilation and LZC technologies, in line with DfE design hierarchy, helped to streamline design
  • Net Zero Carbon in operation evidenced in design by utilising heat pumps, low energy lighting and photovoltaic cells to comply with DfE energy usage intensity targets
  • Building form, fenestration and orientation rationalised with solar control glazing and shading – to maximise natural light and limit solar heat gain. This provides a comfortable and well lit learning environment
  • Thermal comfort achieved using operational windows with hybrid heat recovery units. This provides a constant supply of fresh air to keep students alert and engaged.
  • 70% construction to be completed off-site
  • Incorporated accessibility and audio-visual aids as a core design element, and specialist infrastructure to therapy and sensory rooms
