Newquay Airport
SDS undertook a full survey of the airport’s mechanical and electrical systems to evaluate condition, performance, and control operations. The assessment included detailed analysis of site infrastructure and service capacity.
As part of a major European-funded development strategy to address Newquay Cornwall Airport’s structural and sustainability objectives, SDS carried out a comprehensive survey of the mechanical and electrical (M&E) services across the site. The assessment examined the condition, functionality, and controls of existing systems, including site-wide infrastructure and capacity. Following the survey, SDS delivered detailed designs for the replacement and upgrading of key M&E services within the arrivals, security, and departures terminals.
The team reviewed the airport’s energy consumption, provided renewable energy options, and developed a new lightning protection system, access control systems, and a Building Management System (BMS) installation. The upgraded ventilation plant, enhanced BMS integration, and improved lighting design significantly reduced energy consumption, capital costs, and ongoing maintenance requirements, supporting the airport’s long-term operational efficiency and sustainability goals.
Involvement
-
Carried out a full survey of the electrical and mechanical services to establish their condition, functionality, and controls, including site infrastructure and capacity.
-
Completed detailed condition surveys of all electrical and mechanical systems.
-
Replaced and upgraded various mechanical and electrical services within the arrivals, security, and departures terminal buildings.
-
Reviewed the airport’s overall energy consumption.
-
Provided renewable energy options to improve sustainability.
-
Designed a new lightning protection system.
-
Implemented upgraded access control systems.
-
Installed a new Building Management System (BMS) for improved monitoring and control.
Benefits delivered
-
Identified that the existing mechanical plant serving the ventilation systems in the arrivals, security, and departures areas had limited control capability, with several units no longer operational.
-
Undertook an invasive survey in collaboration with a controls specialist to assess system performance and integration.
-
Developed a detailed design to upgrade and link the existing Building Management Systems (BMS) into a single, unified platform.
-
Introduced a head-end controller to provide one central point of access and monitoring.
-
Implemented local control enhancements, including CO₂ monitoring and time scheduling functions.
-
Determined that the lighting systems within the arrivals, security, and departure terminals accounted for a significant portion of overall electrical consumption.
-
Created detailed lighting and energy models to analyse existing performance and demonstrate the benefits of proposed improvements.
-
Proposed new lighting schemes designed to reduce energy consumption, capital expenditure, and maintenance costs.
-
Achieved significant energy savings through the introduction of lighting controls and the use of LED and low-energy compact fluorescent fittings.
