THEATRE UPGRADES TO A LIVE OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENT
SDS was engaged by North Devon Healthcare NHS Trust to review existing building services infrastructure for proposed upgrades to Operating Theatres 1-4.
SDS was appointed to support the refurbishment of four Operating Theatres, Recovery Bay, and Staff accommodation within a five-storey hospital, delivering feasibility studies, infrastructure assessments, and coordinated design solutions, including a new rooftop plantroom, all in compliance with HTM/HBNstandards.
Involvement
- Delivered a RIBA Stage 2 report in support of the outline business case
- The project involved refurbishment of four Operating Theatres, Recovery Bay, and Staff accommodation, along with construction of a new rooftop plantroom
- Completed a Strategic Outline Case (SOC) to assess the feasibility of installing a temporary operating suite during refurbishment
- Verified the performance of existing mechanical services to inform project phasing
- Site services included plantrooms with air handling units, hot water generation systems, and a steam steriliser
- Installed a new air-cooled chiller on the roof, with the external Energy Centre containing the main boiler and CHP plant.

- Due to limited expansion space, the feasibility study focused on minimising service diversions and assessing existing infrastructure capacity
- SDS carried out developed design and detailed coordination in collaboration with specialist equipment providers
- Reviewed logistics for connecting to existing services and conducted utility surveys to assess capacity and lifespan
- Ensured compliance with HTM/HBN standards for operating theatres.
