Swansea Lower Regeneration

Supported by a £20M grant from the UK Levelling Up Fund, the restoration of the Musgrave and Vivian Engine Houses aims to protect and preserve these historically significant structures.

Services Design Solution (SDS) has been appointed to provide full mechanical and electrical engineering design services up to RIBA Stage 3 for the restoration of the Musgrave and Vivian Engine Houses. The scope of work includes the design of a visitor centre, communal areas, and main circulation routes. The Musgrave Engine House, a scheduled ancient monument, contains the rare Musgrave Engine—believed to be the only one of its kind remaining in its original location. As part of the restoration works, a covered shelter will be constructed to protect the engine’s external elements, and essential preservation work will be carried out on two neighbouring tall chimneys.
Involvement
- Completion of RIBA Stage 2 thermal modelling and overheating analysis
- Execution of RIBA Stage 3 thermal modelling to demonstrate summertime comfort in accordance with CIBSE TM52 criteria
- Development of Stage 3 Simplified Building Energy Model (SBEM) calculations to assess the building’s energy efficiency
- Provision of a draft non-domestic Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) to support and inform energy efficiency improvements
- Preparation of structural planning requirement schedules, outlining approximate locations and sizes of plant rooms, major items of plant, and primary service routes
