Integration of NHS net-zero carbon toolkit and dynamic thermal modelling for a 27 consultation, treatment and examination rooms.

Thornbury Medical Centre is a new £9.2 million, two-storey NHS facility in South Gloucestershire, replacing the existing medical centre and providing 27 consultation rooms, two treatment rooms, and shared accommodation for three healthcare organisations. SDS supported the project from RIBA Stages 1 to 4a, delivering mechanical, electrical, and building physics design, BREEAM guidance, and energy modelling, including ADL2 2021 compliance and TM54 operational energy assessments.

The project has created a modern, energy-efficient, and comfortable environment for staff and patients while supporting net-zero carbon in operation.

  • SDS has supported this fast-paced Primary Healthcare project, designed by Roberts Limbrick Architects, from the outset.
  • Provided mechanical, electrical, and building physics design services.
  • Worked with Morgan Sindall from RIBA Stages 1 to 4a.
  • Delivered M&E design input, including general power and distribution, access control, security, and fire alarm systems.
  • SDS BREEAM team provided pre-assessment and BREEAM design advice.
  • SDS Building Physics team involved from early stages, delivering planning reports with Low & Zero-Carbon studies (RIBA Stage 2).
  • Integrated the NHS Net-Zero Carbon Toolkit and conducted dynamic thermal modelling, including overheating risk assessment, energy modelling for ADL2 2021 compliance, and operational energy projections (TM54).
  • Modern, energy-efficient, and comfortable working environment for staff and patients.

  • Dynamic thermal modelling enhanced understanding of thermal comfort, overheating risk, and effective ventilation strategies.

  • ADL2 2021 compliance modelling supported the development of a roof-mounted PV strategy and net-zero carbon operation.

  • TM54 operational energy modelling provided real-world energy use estimates, integrated with the NHS Net-Zero Carbon Toolkit for greater certainty on energy costs and carbon emissions.
