Vaughan Road
Vaughan Road, in Whipton Village, was selected for a comprehensive development of modern apartments around a communal garden.
These new homes were constructed to the highest environmental standards to reduce energy costs, create healthy homes, and be climate resilient. Over 65% of these homes were ‘affordable,’ with 60 homes available for social rent and shared ownership, prioritising local residents.
A large central green space became the focal point of the scheme. All apartments were designed to enjoy a view of the shared landscaped gardens.
The whole development was designed to Passivhaus and building biology standards, ensuring high sustainability, low energy use and healthy building design.
Involvement
- Collaborated closely with the Passivhaus designer, architect, and wider multidisciplinary team to develop optimised MEP solutions that aligned with the project’s sustainability objectives and certification requirements.
- Supported PHPP modelling with dynamic thermal simulations to inform summer comfort design, including overheating risk assessments and thermal comfort studies.
- Developed the MEP design in accordance with building biology principles.
- Delivered detailed lighting design to meet both energy efficiency targets and visual comfort standards.
Benefits delivered
- As specialist Passivhaus designers, we had a comprehensive understanding of the specific MEP requirements for high-performance buildings. This allowed us to work seamlessly and collaboratively with the Passivhaus designer throughout the project, ensuring full alignment with certification goals and sustainability objectives.
- Designed standalone combi MVHR units with integrated micro air source heat pumps for each apartment, eliminating the need for centralised MEP systems and enhancing individual energy efficiency.
- Collaborated closely with the building biology consultant to develop and implement a low electromagnetic radiation electrical design, supporting occupant health and wellbeing.
