Volunteering for Cardiff’s sustainable food place goals

As part of Together360’s commitment to connecting communities and protecting the planet, our Cardiff office has an ongoing relationship with Global Gardens Project — a community growing initiative dedicated to celebrating food, culture, and sustainability.

The Challenge
Global Gardens provides a shared growing space where people from all backgrounds can learn about sustainable food production, biodiversity, and cultural food heritage. With ambitious goals to improve access to healthy, locally grown food and foster community cohesion, the project relies on both volunteer time and consistent funding to maintain and develop its gardens.

Our Approach
We provide monthly funding to help sustain the garden’s activities — most recently supporting a new composting initiative that reduces food waste, improves soil health, and closes the loop in food production.

In January, our team joined the Global Gardens community to help prepare the site for winter and early spring activity — tackling essential garden maintenance, weeding, and bed preparation.

More recently, we returned to help prepare the garden for the busy growing season ahead. Activities included:

– Laying woodchip paths to improve accessibility and reduce weeds.

– Planting seasonal crops in raised beds and polytunnels.

– Weeding and maintaining communal garden areas to encourage healthy growth.

– Composting organic matter as part of the new funded initiative.

We also gifted and installed a hedgehog house, handmade by one of our team, to support local biodiversity and provide a safe habitat for wildlife on site.

The Impact

– Contributed multiple volunteer days to support Cardiff’s Sustainable Food Place objectives.

– Funded a composting initiative that reduces waste and enriches soil health.

– Improved site accessibility, growing capacity, and habitat diversity.

– Created a safe refuge for local wildlife with the installation of a hedgehog house.

– Strengthened our partnership with a local charity delivering on both environmental and community wellbeing goals.

Why It Matters
This activity reflects the circular nature of Together360 — where environmental action directly supports community health, and community engagement fosters greater care for the planet. By working in line with Cardiff Council’s sustainable food and biodiversity aims, we’re helping to create a greener, more connected city.
