Working with Passivhaus designers and consultants, SDS incorporate standard requirements into building services designs.

Our team use the Passivhaus Planning Package (PHP) to assist calculations of energy balances, designing healthy ventilation and calculating heat load and summer comfort.

Key Considerations

Modelling using PHP can support clients with evaluating the costs of different approaches to meet Passivhaus standards, including:

  • What heating would be needed?
  • What is the overheating risk?
  • What changes are worth considering?
  • How does the existing design match Passivhaus requirements or the project’s objectives?

Overheating Analysis and Thermal Bridging

Using IES VE software, we evaluate overheating risk to Passivhaus and CIBSE TM59 metrics. This enables us to refine the ventilation strategy, optimise services design, and minimise energy use for engineering systems.

Our engineers also support Passivhaus designers in developing thermal bridging strategies.

“SDS have taken into consideration the key design requirements needed for Passivhaus and Building Biology and ensure they have incorporated this into their designs. I would have no hesitation in recommending SDS on any Passivhaus housing projects.”

Richard Hayman, Operations Director – Exeter City Living

Delivering Passivhaus Excellence

Passivhaus demands precision and a joined-up approach. Using tools like PHP and IES VE, we support energy balance calculations, ventilation design, overheating analysis, and thermal bridging strategies to ensure building services meet the standard.

The outcome is low-energy, comfortable, and resilient buildings that deliver lasting value while supporting healthier, more sustainable communities.
